Mechanical engineering is concerned with motion and the processes whereby other energy forms are converted into motion. Mechanical engineers are responsible for conceiving, designing, manufacturing, testing and marketing devices and systems that alter, transfer, transform and utilize the energy forms that cause motion.

Mechanical Engineering is of great importance in most contemporary technologies. Examples include aerospace, power generation and conversion, fluid machinery, design and construction of mechanical systems, transportation, manufacturing, production, biomechanics, and others. This wide range of applications is reflected in the four main stems of the undergraduate curriculum:

  • Thermal and fluid systems
  • Solid mechanics and materials
  • Robotics and control systems
  • Biomechanics

Engineering Mechanics is a more flexible program that enables students to pursue particular interests while centering on a smaller core of courses. Students may use this flexibility to follow specific interests in physics, mathematics, economics, biology, and other disciplines while receiving an engineering degree.

  • Mechanical Engineering Department of Islamic Azad University of Sanandaj

Mechanical Engineering Department was founded in 2006 offering B.Sc. courses in mechanical engineering; The M.Sc. program was established later in 2011 and more than 1500 students have graduated from our department since its establishment. We offer a four-year undergraduate course, which leads to the B.Sc. anda two year postgraduate course leading to M.Sc. degree of the Islamic Azad University of Sanandaj.

Our laboratory experiments are good assistance to lecture courses and are designed to illustrate and to supplement concepts introduced in the lectures. Major laboratories are: fluid mechanics; thermodynamics; vibration and dynamics of machines. Major workshops include: welding; machine tool and auto-mechanic.

  • Our undergraduate programs fall into three main categories namely: Solid Mechanics, Thermal Fluid, andHVAC and Facilities Engineering.
  1. Solid Mechanics Engineering(4 Years Program)

Solid Mechanics is concerned with deformation, stress, stability, fatigue and fracture of materials and structures under various load conditions. Some important issues addressed by solid mechanics include characterization of new materials, safety analysis of machine components, optimal design for stronger and light-weight mechanical systems, and mechanics of biological materials such as cells, tissues and bones. Analytical, experimental and computational methods are often employed in the research of solid mechanics at the nano, micro, and macro length scales.


Applying the basic mechanics principles and material models, together with modern computational tools, in the design and analysis of mechanical components and systems has gained increasing importance in many industries. Talents with the knowledge of solid mechanics and strong experimental and/or computer modeling skills are always in high demand in automobile, aerospace, consumer product, electronic and many other industries.

  1. Thermal Fluid Engineering(4 Years Program)

Thermal Fluidor Thermo-fluids is the combined study of heat transfer, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and combustion. The applications of Thermo-fluids range from efficient engine design to heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC). Engineers in the field of Thermo-fluids will find themselves well prepared for almost any challenge in a variety of industries. Examples include pumps, compressors, wind and hydro power turbines, heat exchangers and solar collectors. This course aims at the design of such equipment and their role in energy systems. As such, it fits in the current interest in energy related issues


  1. HVAC and Facilities Engineering(4 Years Program)

An HVAC and Facilities service engineer or technician finds faults, carries out repairs and maintenance, and services and tests HVAC units and systems as well as plumbing systems. There may also be some installation work involved. The role can be crucial in preventing critical issues with HVAC or plumbing systems that can lead to major problems. Work can be undertaken on a wide range of commercial, industrial and residential sites such as offices, hotels, food and drink venues, leisure centers and schools.

  1. Automotive Technician program prepares students to perform factory recommended maintenance procedures and to diagnose and repair performance problems of engine, transmission, steering, suspension, heating, cooling, brake, and electrical systems in cars and trucks.
  2. Heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers—often referred to as HVAC technicians—work on heating, ventilation, cooling, and refrigeration systems that control the air quality in many types of buildings.
